Clinical Labs (Sunquest) Downtime and Recovery Procedure

Laboratory Systems Engineering, in concert with Health Information and Technology, attempts to provide an environment that allows for uninterrupted laboratory computing operations. This environment includes a secure physical space that is temperature and humidity regulated and designed to provide electrical power that is conditioned and protected by an uninterruptible power supply. Additionally, both hardware and software maintenance agreements have been executed to provide for emergency service 24-hours per day, 7-days per week. Despite these safeguards, the computer system may experience some downtime (both scheduled and unscheduled). This procedure outlines the steps to take whenever such downtime occurs. The procedure also details the steps needed to recover from a downtime situation. Downtime procedures for specimen accessioning, processing/distribution and test result entry are outlined here for use in situations when the laboratory information system (LIS) is not available for use. The duration of the ”downtime” is a determining factor with respect to how the procedures will be utilized and/or modified(situational dependency);the decision as to which procedures are instituted will be made on a case-by-case basis by the appropriate laboratory managers, team leaders, and directors.
