Digestive Disorders
UVA's Digestive Health Center been named one of only 16 National Institutes of Health Digestive Research Centers. UVa is an internationally know for its work in researching Crohn's disease. The Digestive Health Center works in partnership with the UVA Cancer Center, the region's only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, in the treatment of patients with cancers of the digestive system.
UVa Health System offers many innovative treatments and technologies for digestive disorders, including:
- High definition, narrow band endoscope, a special scope that allows doctors to find pre-cancerous growths previously only identifiable through exploratory surgery.
- Argon Plasma Coagulation, UVa was first in the state to offer this advanced intervention used to stop bleeding, and to treat vascular conditions and to shrink tumors in the digestive system.
- Radio Frequency Interstitial Thermal Ablation to locate and remove previously inoperable tumors.
- Endoscopic Ultrasound, a highly accurate scope that uses ultrasound to locate tumors that are traditionally only identifiable through exploratory surgery.
