UVa is ranked as one of the top centers for cancer in the country by US News & World Report and is a National Cancer Institute Clinical Cancer Center. UVa physicians were among the first in the world to develop a successful vaccine trial to fight melanoma. Innovative treatment and technology at UVa includes:
- UVB and PUVA therapy (light therapy) to treat a variety of skin diseases.
- The V Beam laser, the newest version of the pulsed dye laser, is used to treat benign vascular lesions of the skin. With the V Beam laser technology unwanted blood vessels in the skin can be eradicated or greatly reduced, usually without causing a scar.
- Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) uses microscopically controlled surgery to treat skin cancers. Advantages include a low recurrence rate and maximal preservation of normal skin.
- Immunotherapy program focused on melanoma
