Stroke 

Picture of female heart attack victim, clenching her chestA stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery or a blood vessel  breaks, interrupting the flow of blood to an a certain area of the brain.  Brain cells begin to die and brain damage occurs. When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain are lost.  These abilities include speech, movement and memory.

According to the National Stroke Association, stroke is the third leading cause of death in America and the No. 1 cause of adult disability, and 80% of strokes are preventable.

The American Heart Association finds that each year, about 700,000 Americans a stroke. Stroke kills more than 150,000 people a year. That's about 1 of every 16 deaths. On average, every 3 to 4 minutes someone dies of stroke.

This web module is intended to provide an overview of stroke. By understanding the signs, risk factors and appropriate treatment, it is possible to avoid and improve the diagnosis of those with stroke.
