Each year in the US, cardiovascular diseases top the list of most serious health problems. Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death and stroke is the third leading cause of death. Stroke is also the number one cause of serious, long-term disability.

In 2007 UVA is celebrating  50 years of performing cardiac surgery. Many innovative treatments and technological breakthoughs have come from UVA. 

  • UVA was first in Virginia to have an accredited Chest Pain Center, and has helped set national standards for treating heart emergencies.
  • UVA has one of the most advanced cardiac imaging research programs in the United States.
  • UVA researchers discovered effective use of adenosine for treatment of heart rhythm disturbances
  • UVA was the first in Virginia to open blocked coronary arteries using angioplasty and stents.
