Viktor E. Bovbjerg, PhD, Co-Principal Investigator of ICAN Dr. Bovbjerg is Assistant Professor in the University of Virginia School of Medicine Department of Health Evaluation Sciences. He received both his PhD in epidemiology and MPH in health services research from the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Dr. Bovbjerg's research focuses on chronic disease prevention and control, through the development of comprehensive and integrated individual lifestyle, medical, and environmental interventions. In addition to ICAN, Dr. Bovbjerg has participated as an investigator on several lifestyle intervention trials designed to reduce cardiovascular disease risk. He also has ongoing research addressing patient safety, risk reduction, and quality of life.
Anne M. Wolf, MS, RD, Principal Investigator of ICAN ICAN Intervention Team Leader Anne Wolf is a registered dietitian and has had a clinical practice treating obese individuals for over 15 years. Anne's research specialty is in the economic impact of obesity. She is currently an instructor of research within the Department of Health Evaluation Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Anne received her graduate degree from the Harvard School of Public Health and has worked internationally to help health professionals recognize that weight management can be a part of usual medical care.
Mark R. Conaway, PhD ICAN Assessment Team Leader Dr. Conaway is the Assessment Team Leader of ICAN as well as a Professor of Biostatistics and the Director of the Division of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Statistics. Dr. Conaway received his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Minnesota in 1985. His areas of research interest include missing data, design of clinical trials, and longitudinal categorical data analysis.
Jayne Q. Crowther, MSN, APRN, BC, CCRC Clinical Nurse Specialist, Community & Public Health Project Director, ICAN Administrative Team Leader Jayne is the Project Director of ICAN and is employed by the Department of Health Evaluation Sciences in the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She has 21 years of clinical nursing experience as well as 4 years of research experience. Jayne is currently a graduate student at the University of Virginia School of Nursing studying Community and Public Health Leadership and is a member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. Her research interests include lifestyle interventions in the management of chronic disease through advanced roles of nurses and allied health care professionals.
Nisha Botchwey, PhD Dr. Botchwey is an investigator for ICAN and Assistant Professor in the University of Virginia School of Architecture Department of Urban and Environmental Planning. She received both her Ph.D. and MCP in City and Regional Planning from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Design. Dr. Botchwey’s research focuses on the role of local religious and secular institutions in community development and public health promotion. She teaches a Planning and Public Health Seminar and Neighborhood Workshop Planning Application Courses.
Kurtis S. Elward, MD Dr. Elward is an investigator for ICAN. He serves as Medical Director for Quality Improvement at Southern Health Services, Inc. He is also Assistant Professor of Research in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Virginia. Dr. Elward maintains a private practice as a physician with Family Medicine of Albemarle, Inc in Charlottesville and is a member of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians. He is particularly interested in research relating to patient centered quality improvement and precipitants of chronic conditions.

Linda A. Gonder-Frederick, PhD Linda Gonder-Frederick, PhD, is an investigator for ICAN and an Associate Professor of Research in the Department of Psychiatric Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She also serves as Clinical Director for the Behavioral Medicine Center. She received her doctorate at the University of Virginia and is licensed as a Clinical Psychologist. Dr. Gonder-Frederick has a particular interest in researching behavioral and psychological issues surrounding diabetes.
Jerry L. Nadler, MD Dr. Nadler is an investigator for ICAN. He was appointed a Kenneth R. Crispell Professor of Medicine as well as Chief, Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1999. Dr. Nadler also serves as associate director of the NIH Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center since his appointment in 2003. Dr Nadler is currently researching the role of inflammatory lipid pathways and oxidative stress in the pathogenesis and complications of diabetes.
Beverly Yaeger, RN, MS Ms. Yaeger is an external consultant for ICAN as the Senior Health Data Analyst at Southern Health Services, Inc. She received a Masters of Science in Health Evaluation Sciences from the University of Virginia in 2001. Ms Yaeger is also a member of the Virginia Diabetes Council and the Program Committee for the Virginia Lung Association. She is interested in cost effectiveness of lifestyle intervention in the management of chronic illness.
Mir S. Siadaty, MD Dr. Siadaty is an investigator for ICAN and a biostatistician in the Department of Health Evaluation Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. His interest is in developing methodologies to address questions in biomedical and public health fields. During the past 10 years, Dr. Siadaty has developed, tested, and published statistical solutions for a number of diverse problems, including cardiovascular health, infants genetic disorders, medical education, reproductive health, quantitative meta-analysis of medical literature, team work, and community-based urban improvements.
Thomas A. Wadden, PhD Dr. Wadden is an external consultant for ICAN and a Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he is also Director of the Weight and Eating Disorders Program. Dr. Wadden received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also serves on the National Task Force for the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity (NIH-NIDDK) and he has published over 180 scientific papers and is the co-editor of three books. Dr. Wadden is interested in the psychosocial consequences of obesity, as well as the behavioral and metabolic effects of dieting and weight cycling.
